Haha, I have the same problem. Wake up, take the phone, check whether something interesting happened, see 245 versions of a weird car, put the phone aside, continue sleeping OR find an interesting topic and don’t go back to sleep.
For me its so I have to get up to turn the alarm off. If I have it in reach from the bed I will turn the alarm off and never know it lol. Or never remember it anyways
HIJACK ALERT!
I finished upgrading the MK4 to “S” yesterday, and since @Tokoloshe has been hassling me to play with some 70° overhangs, and I’d already started on an idea for the phone holder I thought I’d just go a bit silly.
Why not, I thought, stick your $2000 phone in a cradle that holds a $5 Ikea charger, complete with analogue amplifier. (I don’t care if it doesn’t work, I have the choice of a couple of blue tooth speakers and the phone talks directly to my hearing aids anyway).
I was going to print without supports - and I think it will do it, but I chickened out in the end and plonked in one lonely little organic support in for giggles, and while I could print it in four hours at .28 layer heights, that would finish at around 12:30 am, so why not, I thought, see what .1mm layers look like? If it doesn’t topple over while I’m sleeping, it will be finished for breakfast!
Love it. Make the amplifier multi material in gold and reap those meters!
Looks awesome!
Hehe, thanks! I’m really chuffed about this one because I am learning that useless dust collecting objects can be fun!
I don’t think I’ll be making a career out of making copies of action figures, but there’s another spool of filament in the Bank of Prusameters so that’s nice. They used to send out actual filament, but I think once they learned how expensive postage to Australia is they had a better idea!
Wow, that’s awesome! I know that’s at least twice that @bitingmidge has won first place, and I know at least one other time he won either 2nd or 3rd. Peter, you are the man. How many times have you won so far?
It’s actually quite fun when wheels can move. Of course, it would be even more interesting if you’re willing to install a toy electric motor inside.
What’s oddly interesting about that phone charger car thing I did is if you glue the rims but not the tires, the tires can actually still spin. Since the rims don’t spin, it’s not as realistic, but still kinda neat.
Thanks Doug, yes, I have been lucky enough to score a couple of runners-up - one was particularly disappointing as I had a real shot at first with it and it was for a Mk3s! That was the printed table and bookshelf system, which never really fired anyone else’s imagination, but I still think it has potential.
I don’t think you can take the judging too seriously though, it all seems to be a bit arbitrary, but I do tend to take the competitions seriously as often I do things that I wouldn’t do normally - this current one was just a test to see if I could print a coiled pipe with minimum support - I could! D
