Estlcam not retaining settings

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? It seems like every time I open both V12 and V11, some of my settings are getting reset or just aren’t being stored.

I’m trying to move over to 12 right now, and after getting all my settings moved over from 11, I opened it again today to find that NOTHING was stored, including my tools. Thankfully I saved a project in anticipation of this which restored my tools, but none of my other settings.

I even made sure to export my settings after setting them all yesterday, but apparently the settings exported as the defaults and not with all the changes I made. I also just confirmed by opening the setting text files that, even after updating all my settings, the exported settings file is not using any of my updated settings and just storing the defaults.

So, not only is the software not storing my settings, but I can’t even export my settings to restore them later.

Any ideas?

Any time you make changes to the tools, you will need to “Save Tool List” That creates a new saved list. It doesn’t, however, change the default tools list. For that you need to “Save Default Tool List”

Same thing (I think) with settings. After importing, you may need to save the settings.

I’m not seeing any option for “Save Default Settings”, just “save settings”, which for me is just exporting a zip file with text files of all the settings, and they don’t match the settings I currently have in the program.

Hello,

if your’re using multiple open windows the tool list of the one that is closed last is ultimately saved.
Unless you have a default list - this is only saved if you explicitly command it.

Hi Christian, thanks for the response!

I am not using multiple windows. I do see now that I can save the default tool settings, but the main problem I’m having is that none of my other settings (basic settings, CNC program settings) are being retained by the software, and they also don’t seem to export correctly when I attempt to save them with “save all settings”. This seems to just save the program defaults rather than the settings I currently have applied.

C:\ProgramData\Estlcam\V12 (and \v11) contains three setup files for the three Setup windows:

  • Setup : Basic = ‘Settings CAM.txt’ (Setings Estlcam.txt)
  • Setup : CNC Programs/PP = ‘Settings PP.txt’ (Settings Postprocessor.txt)
  • Setup : CNC Controller = ‘Settings CNC.txt’ (Settings LPT Adapter.txt)

Only the later two can be saved (as) and opened from their default window tab. A (yet another) frustrating thing with v12 is that any attempt to open/save any configuration file (or .tl tool list) will open the last used directory (most likely a drawing directory). In v11 open/save will open the relevant (missing in v12) ‘CNC Presets’ (controller), ‘Post Processors’ or ‘Tool Lists’ directory (in C:\ProgramData\Estlcam\V11).

I liked the option to set what I thought was a custom Tool Lists directory in v12, but the only thing that setting can do is save a copy (Tools_Def.dat) of the default tool list (Tools.dat) to the specified directory.

It would be nice to be able save as/open all configuration files to/from predefined user configurable directories for Basic Settings, PP Settings, CNC Settings and Tool Lists.

…v11 configuration files are not compatible w/ v12. V11 tools Add(ed) to v12 will need editing.

Interesting… sounds like I might just need to stick with 11. I’m wanting to start trying some relief carvings and read that 12 would generate better toolpaths for this, but it doesn’t seem worth it if I’m constantly needing to manually re-set things every time I open the software.

There is seemingly a “save all settings” function in V12 like you described that seems to save a zip file of the tool list and text files containing all of the other settings, although as I described in another comment, all of the text files contain the default settings and not the settings I currently have set.

Also for anyone else reading: am I doing something wrong when replying to comments in this thread? I’m hitting “reply” to the responses I’m wanting to reply to, but my comments from my perspective seem to just be inline with the main thread with no indication that they’re replies to anyone.

Probably a dumb question, but this is my first time actually posting/interacting with a thread in this forum and want to make sure people are seeing my replies to them.

No, the thread will always show responses in chronological order, but people will be notified if you replied to their message. Some of these threads get very long and reaponses all over the place would be very difficult to follow.

Sorry, I can’t help much with Estlcam12, because I’m still using my v11.

If you highlight some text from their post, you can select “quote “ and that text is included in your reply, showing who you are quoting, and notifying them.

Is your folder with Estlcam maybe write protected?

There are hundreds of 12 users and it’s not a common problem, even looked in the German forums.

What, specifically, are you “needing to manually re-set”? The only thing I’ve ever had to redo are edited/added tools because I neglected to save the (default) tool list after making changes/before closing Estlcam. All changes in Setup windows are automatically saved (to files in C:\ProgramData\Estlcam\V12). My reply was a bit off topic because using the setup window save/open options are only needed if you want more than one version of a setup file.

Basic settings and CNC program settings. They are not being automatically saved as far as I can tell, because they’ve all been reset to the program defaults when it opens again.

Quoting myself again.

It is not, although I am beginning to suspect the issue is something to do with my system since this seems to be an issue specific to me. I’ll try installing on another machine.

I don’t know if corruption is a possibility, but you could try deleting Settings CAM.txt and Settings PP.txt and then reconfigure (Estlcam will create replacements).

I usually save a tool file with each job and only have the tools used for that job. The reason is that a lot of unused tools can be a bit hard to search through and the tool list is a bit difficult to use with a lot of tools. The tool list then stays with the job in hand and is very easy to find if needed.
Making new tools is pretty easy and after a bit of experience it becomes second nature for the tool settings.

same issue with estlcam 11. without a visible grid (workspace) in v12, it’s not an option for me…

anyone figure this out? needing to remember to input all of the code and settings every time i open the program is a HUGE deterrent.

Set it up in 12 at the bottom left corner
