Elfa closet rod for the beam?

Has anyone tried using Elfa closet rod, from The Container Store, for the beam? it’s 1" diameter and smooth. Not very thick wall but seems sturdy. One negative, longest one I see listed is 4’, but I’m starting small, so that long enough for me for now.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum!

I think the Elfa rods will deform during use. I’ve looked at them earlier, and I remember thinking that they won’t hold up.

I might be wrong! Do you know the dimensions for the wall thickness?

I measured it just now. The wall is 0.027". I’m guessing that’s a bit too thin. Do you know what wall thickness would be a good compromise between cost, weight and rigidity? I’m a bit new to all of this.

I’m not 100% certain, but I think 1.2-1.5mm thickness is the sweet spot between being sturdy enough, but not too heavy to create slinging and sag. If you search through the forum, you’ll find maaany posts on this. Just don’t fill the tubes with concrete
