Basic question. I’ve not printed my dust shoe yet. But my trim router has a button close to the collet to lock rotation for tool changes. Does the dust shoe not block access to this? Having to unbolt the dust shoe for every tool change sounds like a pain in the posterior.
You still should have two wrenches?
Not sure whether it blocks it though. ![]()
The dust shoe slides on and off easily. If you position the button near the opening you can reach it. As Philipp says the two wench method will result in a tighter grip on the bit.
My Dewalt has the button too. It doesn’t block it. You can position the router low enough that it works fine. And it is easier to do with the dush shoe removed.
Not on the Dewalt. No place for a second wrench.
I’m a casual hobby user and not a heavy duty by any means. I was used to two on my Primo using two wrenches but on my LR4 just been using the push button and has worked really well. But sure can’t argue against NOT using two. My mount it’s buried.
This is why I modified my dust shoe to have:
- Wider “throat” on the little skirt around the router’s collet
- Higher/longer slot to hold the dust shoe on the tool mount
- A knob for adjusting the height
This way I can easily
-unscrew the knob
-lower the dust shoe
-change the bit with a clear view
-get the shoe back up until it touches the router,
-tighten the screw
The longer slot and knob do not interfere with the original design and could - IMO - be included as standard for a wider compatibility
Alternatively, I thought about printing the dust shoe without the little skirt/collar around the router, and have it printed separately and screwed onto the dust shoe
This would let user accomodate multiple router size/configurations (with button, with dual wrench, different collet sizes and legth under the router, …) without re-printing different dust shoes
