Drum Sander

I am not really sure whether I posted it before but can’t find it, I only remember that @DougJoseph asked for a how-to and I promised him one. That was quite a while ago…

This is what it looks like:

And here is the video (it was a 5-hour complete build video but I figured nobody was going to watch that… :D):

Thank you so much! Would you believe that literally just a day or two ago I started back into my search of how to make a drum sander! I will be looking at what you did with fresh eyes.

Watched the video! Super helpful. Thanks!

Very cool! Still haven’t figured out why drum sanders are so dang expensive… imagining a monstrosity that’s half LR4 and half ZYLINDERSCHLEIF. Mills the part, then lowers the ZYLINDER and begins SCHLEIFING.

Looks way cool! I had been planning to build a drum sander for years but then found one for super cheap at an estate sale. I was a tiny bit disappointed because I was looking forward to building it haha

As much as I like it, I’d just buy one because the automatic feed is great and the precision is better. The riser is a bit wobbly still etc. :slightly_smiling_face:

I built the stumpy nubs version stretched out to 27” and it worked well. Adjusting it was a slight pain but not too bad. Worst part of all was feeding it. I did look at getting stuff to make my own auto feed but never actually did anything. Built it, used it once, and never turned it on again. Have thought about it several times but then never actually get it out lol

See, that’s why I didn’t build that one. I actually use mine for nearly every project.

For instance I can’t plane the Satinwood, it’s too hard and rips, so I sanded it for the box. The coasters are too small for the planer. You guessed it, sander… :slightly_smiling_face:

I think if I did something better for the feed even if still manual I would use it more. I just haven’t felt like fixing it lol

@Tokoloshe , looks like you’re missing something. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

What are you, my mom? I actually have one of those, but I rarely use it. The only really dangerous thing is my table saw and I always work with the hood there. :slightly_smiling_face:

I added the files to my website (they are in the sidebar): Werkstatteinrichtung – HaWiWe
There are also improvements for the riser that are pretty important that weren’t in the video because I added them later on.

Also, can I bitch about YouTube’s algorithms again. This has been, so far, my most successful video ever and I cut it down from five hours to 20 minutes in like, half an hour yesterday. I just don’t get it and it feels like a sham that this video does so well. I should add some stupid jokes.

I am also pretty sure that the video for the two-colour box will again get like, 4 views in the first 8 months or so… :stuck_out_tongue:

I am one of the 4 lol

I never understood their algorithms either. The videos I think will do well flop and vice versa.

I have seen this same thing said by MANY creators I watch on YouTube. Who knows how they come up with their algorithms

The drum sander works, but it’s kind of frustrating sometimes because you have to hold the workpiece in your hands and slide it in preeeetty far to clean it up (and I like the skin on my fingers, so that’s always a gamble).
It’s also not perfectly straight, so one edge is sanded more than the other etc. The sandpaper also does not stick too well so that I have to re-fasten it pretty often.
I could have fixed it with a different riser, a modified drum etc., but did not want to put the time and energy into it.
So now I bit the bullet and bougth a new drum sander after having scoured the used machine market for a year without something popping up that was a good deal.
It’s this one (an American one, who would have guessed. Not me…):

Looks almost exactly like mine - because mine was a jet which bought performax which bought it back which was bought by laguna.

So that explains it! It’s a good machine just don’t try to take too big a bite at one time, and remember to keep the dust extraction on. I can’t understand why they never did anything about that one single outlet, but I never did get round to finishing my printed four into one manifold for it either. You’ll love it.

Yeah, the Laguna made several improvements, like the “Intellisand” and the quick height change thingy. The bigger one was on offer and would’ve only cost 100€ more, but I really a) don’t need it b) don’t have the space and c) wanted the quick height change. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hoping that I might be able to make the thin veneer that I need for a self-made deck.

The drum sander is a great tool! I used min this weekend to make a bunch of walnut edge banding for my bathroom vanity’s drawer fronts.
