this link gave me the idea , but building it using x and z axis of the low rider but setting Z as y movement if that makes sense thought would be more rigid for the router and controlling it via jackpot board

So you’re saying you’d have the gantry stationary and turned on its side, then moved in and out relative to the lathe using the linear slides. That would probably work but you might see some backlash issues with the lead screws, potentially? I think the LR4 uses gravity to its advantage in a few cunning ways in the design, that being one of them. No idea if that’s an important issue or not.

You could always have the gantry positioned so that it sits on top of the lathe, perhaps? That’s what I’d be tempted to do, unless there’s some specific reason it makes sense to have it out in front? You could 3D print some fittings to mount to the head-stock with locating pins so that it just drops into place or something?

It’s so interesting think about how to approach this in so many ways. I don’t have a lathe and it’s not really something I have the space to dedicate to so I’d be more inclined to get to the same point using a rotary axis type scenario. On the other hand, if I had a lathe then aaaabsolutely I’d be trying to mount an LR4 gantry to it.

the reason i thought of putting it on side and not on top, is top of lath is higher than if on side .

get what your saying bout backlash and gravity being better on top

guess could bogie it up so gantry sits inside outside frame and closer to chuck , something to look at once i actually get the lathe

im not sure where im going to put it either, but you don’t turn down free stuff :slight_smile:

Oh yeah, for sure. If someone was offering me a wood lathe, I’d end up with a wood lathe under the stairs or something.

I was thinking more about the LR4 + lathe approach and I was thinking, it’s pretty quick to take a gantry off a table… if you made a 3D printed bracket ledge for one side of the standard LR4 trucks and then a second bracket behind the tailstock, you could probably just plonk a regular LR4 gantry straight on there without issue… The other thing I was thinking is making a table with a cutout at the end that a lathe could slide into…

Are you planning on just running the lathe as-is or have you considered running it from a stepper motor for indexing? That’s what I’m tempted to do with a rotary axis in order to get the capability to do things that aren’t just a round profile. The CAM aspect still seems like a problem from what I can tell, though.

now that would be nice, but with my screwed up brain , might be in the to hard basket , baby steps jusst run it as is to start with

agree re cam , trial and error i guess ,as said way i look at it x and y will follow a curve looking down on table swapping y to the z on LR4 should follow curve on lathe
