Does orientation matter?

If I am cutting out a rectangle that fits both in the X and Y direction, is there a recommended orientation to align it?

For example, aligned to X

or aligned with Y

It is more stable along the edge of Y, but mostly I do ignore that.

I usually think ‘which way will waste less material’ because I’m cheap

  1. Do I care about the orientation of the wood grain? This often dictates how I can put the material on tbe machine.

  2. How hard is the material to cut? The LR only has 1 X axis motor, but 2 Y axis motors, so for more difficult material, I’m in the habit of trying to keep the strain on the X axis motor down to help keep it cooler. Load does seem to matter to temperature, and not just current, not that I can explain why…

These criteria often dictate material layout in CAM for me, given a shape that fits either way.

Well I would rotate the part in CAM, so the result should be exactly the same.

I just cut wood right now, but trying to develop best practices.
