It is not as bad as I thought it would be ACA makes a huge difference. Here is a good calculator that can estimate the credits:
This is a good article about the strategies. But just pulling it out and paying the penalty isn’t that bad if none of the other strategies work out. I spent a bunch of time trying to decide how to withdraw and the best option was paying the penalty. Since we still have kids in the house and don’t spend a ton, the actual income taxes are not high. The penalty is pretty much our only tax.
A lot of stuff, like the ACA credit is based on income, not wealth. So it does help to have a taxable brokerage. But it should be filled after you do your tax advantaged accounts.

Done, ready for delivery to its excited new owner. The drawing took maybe 15 minutes, the print 17, dismantling the machine to fit the part and cleaning it maybe another 30 minutes.
I remembered as I was mid disassembly, that this model has a design flaw that has the cotton pin tangling with the handle if you aren’t really careful carrying it. I had a friend who broke hers taking it out of the box, but I had no printer then so we waited six weeks for the twenty dollar part to arrive.
Quite a satisfying afternoon really, and if anyone has a need for a replacement part for a Singer machine, the STL is here.
