"Crazy" idea: paper cutter carcass as base for small CNC

We had an Xacto brand paper cutter, 15" x 15" and it recently got a bad gouge in its bed knife, made by the cutting blade, during normal but somewhat heavy duty use. The manufacturer does not sell parts (cannot get another bed knife), and the existing bed knife is not symmetrical in either possible “flip it” axis. I was staring just now and thinking that surface is tiny but nicely rigid. Just a crazy thought from a tired old guy. Not gonna try it myself, just thinking out loud. Those who wish to shoot holes through the concept, be gentle in your critique.

Can you share the model name/number, Please?

Are you thinking of a 3018 style cnc, a badic core xy or are you thinking lowrider?

I can, but, since the blasted thing costs over $82 new, this “crazy” idea only makes sense if someone has one with a damaged blade and looking for some way to repurpose the carcass!

Speaking of which, I have one, with a damaged blade and I’d be happy to gift it (free + whatever actual shipping is) to someone else looking for a way to repurpose the carcass!

PS: If someone wanted to loosen some screws, remove the flat “bed knife” and put it on a belt sander or grinder until the unevenness was gone, and put it back on and adjust the blade a teensy bit, it’s a new paper cutter.

That’s a good question, but in my case, I am already “LowRider Poor” (have three of them, full size with router, small with router (on a portable fold-up table), and a medium sized one with a plasma cutter). — So I am not looking to make another CNC.

Given this paper cutter carcass would make a nice platform for a small one, I was thinking it might suit someone who does marking, engraving, making their own PCBs, or carving of smaller things.

Mount it under a laser?

Excellent idea. But I’m also laser poor. I have huge 100w CO2 laser, and two or three good sized diode lasers, one quite powerful. Plus the galvo laser marker. I pretty much never need those diodes.
