Crafting Closure

This one requires a backstory.

In 2021, I ordered parts for the MPCNC. The kit was a project to build with my dad. My dad was diagnosed with dementia a few years back, and the build was an excuse to spend time together. We built many a heathkit when I was a kid, and this was our project at the other end of the timeline. We also started building an LR2.

He passed away a year later in 2022. The lead time for manufacturing and placing a headstone is very long. I was visiting the cemetery this morning, and had the idea of cutting my own temporary marker. I checked with the office to make sure that what I make would be in compliance. This afternoon I made this.

The wood is a walnut cutoff with a live edge that I used for some prior guitar projects. I’ll paint the inside of the letters and sand it flush so the letters are nice and crisp. Cut and dress the edges, add some poly, and it should be a good stand-in until the stone arrives.

Quite happy with how this turned out.

Forum won’t let me quote all of a one sentance post.

That looks great.

I’m sorry to hear of your loss.
How cool to book end making things with your dad.
A very fitting post for this memorial day holiday.

Memory unlocked! I sorted resisters by color code at 5 years old and “helped” dad build a color TV from a Heathkit!

Glad you have these great memories to look back on. Sorry for your loss.

Did you use the edge of the corrugated cardboard box to organize the parts? Also mom’s cupcake pans.

I think we did the cardboard thing. I also remember saving up for the “Programmable Doorbell” kit and building it. Man, it sounded horrible, but my parents kept it for years! Changing the “song” it played with each season for a while.

We made that too. It’s programmed by wiring up some sequence inside. It’s still in use at their house.
