I accidentally stumbled on this post, which also happened to be at the time I’m soundproofing the front of the Transit Camper Van, and tidying up a few loose ends - like adding a phone charger to the driver’s door pocket.
This folks, is how you turn a simple job into one that takes all day, all the more because I was probably a little too fanatical about making it appear OEM!
The standard VW pocket is large enough to lose things in, and the thought of a socket and a phone rolling around under assorted hardware didn’t appeal, so I made some stuff to make it work to suit me. I was going to embed the giblets from an Ikea wireless charger in the phone plate, and I may still do that, in the meantime the hex one looks nice and a little right angled charge cord arrives tomorrow.
The small end cap needs a little tape to hold it in place - so I made a recess to keep the panel gap respectable!
It’s tighter down there than it looks.
Now I’m wishing I’d added supports to the recess for the charger, but it can’t be seen once installed so only I, and the internet knows how rough it is. The dividers house multitool, garage door opener and coin tray (which is mostly used for rubbish but there you go)
And fully loaded - the phone tray is completely free to pivot or just pull out - there’s plenty of room for wallet, sunglasses, and rubbish tip vouchers behind and under it and access is really simple.
I hope you enjoyed this tiny tour of my camper! ![]()
