Cedar strip canoe plans?

Does anyone have recommendations on plans and procedures? I am looking for a project that will pass some time

Does it need to be cedar strip? Both Canoe Craft by Ted Moore and Building a Strip Canoe by Gil Gilpatrick include plans and instructions for several models. The station molds are different sizes/shapes and can be spaced differently on the strogback to make slight overall length adjustments.

I haven’t built a cedar strip but did build a Bolger Gypsy from Dynamite Payton’s Build the New Instant Boats (tack-and-tape fiberglass) and much more recently a Boardyak (lashed cedar and ply frame with Dacron skin) designed by Dave Gentry and built from plans bought from his site.

They were both great fun, but the Dacron boat is a whole lot easier to move around.

No just wanting to get ideas. I like the look of cedar but will look into any and all suggestions. I will probably never use it but lots of family :family_man_woman_boy: that will at least attempt it

Not cedar strip, but I built two Geodesic Airlite Boats and gave them away as gifts…a Whitehall Jr. and a SnowShoe 12. With their translucent skins, I find them beautiful, they are easy to move around, and built times a short compared to a cedar strip canoe. I’ve toyed with building a Chuckanut 12 by Gave Gentry (referenced by Tom). The main thing holding me back is lack of storage for the boat once done.

My Boardyak is hanging from my garage ceiling on a couple of tie-down straps. It weighs significantly less than a bicycle.

I’d start with buying this book. Tom referenced it earlier:

Every so often I pull my copy out and drool over the pages again. I still plan on building one ‘one day’.

Now that I’ve done a dacron boat, I can’t get past the amount of prep and dust needed to get all the strips ready to go. I also don’t look forward to the fiberglassing process again.

All my boats are used on inland protected waters for recreational use. If I were building for Great Lakes or ocean use, I’d go for as robust a construction as I could get.
