You need to go to university!
Whatās the worst that can happen?
Quit being a wimp and just try it.
Try this you will love it.
Oysters are amazing.
I mean I can just keep going, some of my friends are pricks, in the best way possible.
I got that one too. Did not match my experience. Even when standing across the street from the Pacific ocean, so they were definitely fresh.
Lol. Wish my kidās college had double/minor degree option that results in typical academic subject, and a trade, e.g. certified experienced machinist/plumber/electrician/hvac tech. Feel like a lot of apprenticeships are exploitive cheap labor.
Borrow against your 401k to buy a new car, buy a new car, get a payday loan, take out a second mortgage. Ask my doctor about ā¦
I know a guy who go this engineering degree in Germany. That system had him change between study and an actual engineering job each year I think, maybe every semester. You got real world exposure, and an idea of what you really wanted to do. When I went to school I just guessed at what engineering degree I should do. I tried to change to industrial design and I had a professor beg me not to, I think I got lucky and he knew what was better for me.
Donāt buy an electric car.
My 2018 model 3 has 200,000 miles on it and no major maintenance issues, original brakes are still at 80%. Apparently saves me about $1,500 in gas per year. I travel a fair bit to visit family and the lane keep and auto-brake have likely saved me from a few accidents.
okay you sold meā¦but I do not drive very much. Still want one.
Weāve got college with work semesters here and weāve got college interlaced with apprenticeship.
But honestly, iām super happy with the German system for apprenticeships, at least in industry, not necessarily in crafts.
Worst advice⦠I really donāt know. Probably the obsession from various family members/friends about how much mortgage we have and how fast weāre paying it off. That took a while to shake and even longer to feel like I inherently understood it. If Iād started investing in broad market ETFs instead of putting that money into the mortgage Iād probably have been able to retire comfortably at 40ā¦
Dunno what itās like in the US but 2nd hand EVs here in NZ can be pretty impressive value for money for the right price. Repairs on older Teslas arenāt that commonly necessary, despite some of the common doomsayers, but they can be spicy. Find out if thereās a good independent workshop that deals with Teslas/EVs near you and youāll be golden. If you can, the 2021+ SR+ models with the Lithium Iron Phosphate pack have been holding up really well. The lack of periodic maintenance is incredibly freeing and itās one of those things that you look back on and go āhow did I put up with that for so longā.
Conversely, now, āyou donāt need to go to university, just learn a trade!ā. Here the trades have been going through massive ebbs and flows, at the moment electricians are all complaining about barely being able to cover costs, hours being reduced, jobs being brutally undercut etc. while everyone I know with an engineering degree just keeps on keeping on. I think the more important thing here is that itās not necessarily about ādo thisā or ādo thatā, but try to figure out what it is you actually ālikeā doing and then try to find a job doing that, even if it takes you ābackwardsā⦠Too many people worry about switching to a different career path but in reality their previous experience, even if itās only tangentially related, can always be valuable in some way⦠More acceptance for people wanting to try new things or change direction is what would make the most difference, I think.
Even just the way of learning is soooo different!
Been there, done that after wasting way too much time. Went from Nanotechnology as a bachelors program to software development apprenticeship.
Keep in mind, the german dual vocational training system is very solid overall, altough the trades here have a bit of a habit of not training their trainees properly and then complaining that todays youth canāt do the jobs
Got a (hardly) used Opel Corsa Electric. Drives as if on rails, acceleration is scarily high and it made the 1200 kilometer trip to denmark without any issues with charging.
A bit slow on the German Autobahn at some times, but 150-ish kilometers an hour is a already faster than you should be driving for prolonged time anyways.
I read that somewhere a month or so back, bang for the buck for lightly used is supposed to be insane.
I drive a full sized truck for my non work activies so I think an EV might really pay for itself just using it for my tiny daily commute in gas and tire savings.
Yeah, the depreciation in some earlier models of EV has been insane, largely on the back of the capabilities having advanced so fast and the initial configurations being so limited.
Iāll post up a different thread to avoid derailing this one further!
āGo onā¦sheāll be right!ā
The Vietnam-era military draft was about to grab me⦠as I was failing as a music major in university at the time. Wound up joining the Navy instead (on good advice from former HS teacher)⦠and the Navy taught me a trade as an aviation electronic technician. I enjoyed the work and seemed to have a knack for it⦠and, after discharge, I returned to school knowing now what I wanted to do. I turned that technician experience into a BSEE degree, a hobby, and a career I was able to retire from.
Donāt worry about putting the gas station out of business I drive a first gen Raptor that will get anywhere from 11-13 MPG ![]()
āTrust me.ā ![]()
As I did on the jobā¦trust and verify.
@Bigfoot16 Sounds like you need a Telo truck! TELO Trucks | The All-Electric Mini Truck lol.
I donāt have any water toys and tend to camp in my car so no need to tow anything. Electric trucks still arenāt viable for long haul tow trips in my opinion; gas still has a lot of life left in it for sure. And itāll be sad day when antique cars no longer rumble down the street.
