Re: the storage box (storing them edge up): Yes, when it comes time to play, you just pull out all the pieces. No need to know which is which until you get them all out.
After making quite a few of these that have sold on Etsy, my color scheme and stain/paint approach has evolved from this:

I can still do the desaturated look on the seas, but it involves diluting the paint with water and that can cause the oak boards to curve some, so I’ve steered away from it.
