Carving horn/antlers

Has anybody here experience in cnc carving horn/antlers?

I’m trying to mill a set of dice out of deer antlers, but I’m not sure about what settings and bits I should use.

My best guess is that it behaves like hard wood?

I’d start with that. Bone and antler are harder than wood, but can have soft spots. You’ll need to test, and have plenty of ventilation and dust collection! You really don’t want to be inhaling that stuff.

I’m not sure how it’ll deal with the irregular surface either. I’d guess you need to set the material height as the highest point off the work surface and then let it “air carve” as it makes it way down to the surface of the antler? I bet it turns out gorgeous! Please share some photos if you get a carve going!

Yeah I thought about that as well, and I think my solution will be to first cut the antlers in manageable pieces and then place them in a rectangular box and fill it with resin, this way it will be a lot easier to mount to the cnc.
