Calling all metal engraving experts... or opinions

Recently I showed off my kitchen knife collection. My side gig making kitchen knife handles as paid for a lot of shop upgrades including the MPCNC.

  1. I plan on using my MPCNC to rough cut, no precision needed 1/32 to 1/8th soft metals like copper, nickel silver, brass. I would like to know what settings people have used. If I am still lacking advice, I will just start with 1/8th info on the milling basics.

  2. I have to finish off a few hardened steel blades for my own line. I would really like to engrave my makers mark blade. It doesn’t have to be deep, but I don’t want a surface finish. These are 1084 steel hardened to about 60 RHC. Any advice?

Thanks
Ben

Hey Ben,
Before I start, I wanna clarify that I’m not by far an expert in knife making and has been many year (almost 30yrs) i played with metal and fire to harden… but…if my memory stil serves me, when you work a knife, the metal (in your case 1084) hard steel, change color, to a dark gray almost black , at that point you can use a Laser to engrave your marker mark to it.
All the soft metals you mention (brass, copper and etc…) you will be fine cutting it on your MPCNC. (I have NOT done it my self) as my MPCC was just born… but base on other members experience with “aluminium” you should be able to cut any others soft metal.

Laser isn’t an option right now. I would love a k40, but just not yet.

Electroetching sounds like it might be easier than engraving in the case of harded steel. I can use my mpcnc to mill the canal mask. ;).
