After having someone beat me to the punch on a brand new $50 Kobalt ER11 router on FB Marketplace, I’m feeling pretty bummed.
In 2026, what is everyone’s recommendation for the best budget router/spindle? I’ll be cutting mostly wood, maybe a few plastics, and wouldn’t mind to leave the door open for some aluminum. Is a basic Harbor freight trim router my best bet on a budget or are there other options out there that are better?
I’ve seen some mentioning of the advantages of an ER11 collet. Is this mainly for more affordable tooling?
Any tips and advice is much appreciated!
Have you considered using one of those ER11 collet-holder adapters on a trim router?
I’ve seen adapters like these that are made to fit onto a 6.35 mm (1/4") shaft and then give you an ER11 collet system. I’m actually curious whether anyone here has used one on a router and if they’re any good — especially regarding runout, balance, and safety at router RPMs.
If they work well, it could be a relatively cheap alternative for someone who wants the flexibility of ER11 without having to switch to a completely different spindle/router.
Has anyone here tried one of these adapters?
I’ll echo this, would love to hear from someone who has used one of those adapters! Also any links anyone has to an adapter would be great. I’m having a hard time finding one I’m confident will work.
