Belt Tension - what is too much or not enough?

So I never quite knew how much is too much or not enough on the belt tension.

So I thought I would throw up a quick video of my tension and wait for a reply.

To me, that looks reasonable. It isn’t visibly sagging, and it isn’t so tight as to cause unnecessary friction at the motor. That’s the basic requirement.

You should be able to unhook the belts from the Y max hooks, but they should not be in danger of falling off.

I tried a small digital hanging scale on the tensioner blocks of Y axis. Ryan says around 7lbs of tension is all that is needed. I hook it on the Y tensioner block right by the screw and slowly pull until I see the tensioner screw move. I’m sure there is some inaccuracy however I believe it tensions both sides more evenly. Doesn’t work on X axis.

I would have said too wobbly, I can’t remove mine without loosening the screws a few turns, but maybe I am doing it wrong. Just check whether your cuts are accurate. You can do that very well with finger joints, those react really harshly to direction changes with the wrong belt tension because of the quick changes of direction.

I agree with @Tokoloshe that it looks a little floppy. But this is very much subjective.

I used a small tensionmeter to try and find a reasonable tension. I saw it skipping teeth on the belt during my first cuts. So I tightened up a bit more and it seems good now. I can remove my belts without turning the tensioner screws, its not easy but I don’t routinely turn them.
