Axis orientation

To me the natural way to face this Lowrider is from the side opposite of the bed conduit rail. I would expect X0Y0 to be towards me and to the left end of travel and Z positive from the bed face at zero. Currently I have X increasing along gantry towards the bed conduit rail and y increasing from left to right facing it as described. This is a transposed system to anything I have ever used and I am strongly considering swapping my X and Y axis so X travels along the long distance of the bed from left to right and Y from the near edge to the far edge adjacent to the bed conduit. Did I just get things set up incorrectly or am I misunderstanding something?

You aren’t alone in that interpretation, but that isn’t the normal way.

With the gantry extending that way, it’s partly in the way, all the time. It makes monitoring the job in progress kind of annoying, and I end up sitting to the “side” where I can see the tool all the time anyway.

However, if you are confident enpugh with the firmware, the LR4 gives you the choice to put the end stop to the other side for the core, and of course you can also put the 2 long end stops the other way around as well, to home and park the machine out of the way today and unload the work. I did consider homing to Y Max for just that reason, but a quick macro to move near Y Max does pretty well for me.

It’s your machine, do what makes sense to you, but in the meantime, if you build it the way kt was intended, we can all be a lot more help while tou get your feet wet.

X along the gantry and Y along the long side of the bed is the standard LowRider layout, so your setup matches how it was designed, and swapping axes in firmware means docs and shared configs won’t line up with yours anymore. Is the main goal just having X0Y0 at the front left from where you stand? If so, changing which end it homes to might get you there without swapping X and Y.
