Another random request, this time to make an award. It was for a family friend and they were really stoked with how it turned out. I told them I really hope they dont become popular because I would struggle with an order for 50 of them ![]()
I made it in some Merbau hardwood panel I had left over. It’s using my same technique for the resin - sealed prior to pouring with Feast Watson Sanding Sealer, then slightly underpoured. One of the good things about the sanding sealer is if you spill any resin on the wood, it can be wiped/sanded off very easily leaving no trace. Lettering down the bottom is just hand painted black and same thing you can sand off the excess no problems.
Hand sanded first and the finish is Feast Watson fine buffing oil.
This time I decided to try my hand at some inlay. I had some 5mm x 1mm gold aluminium inlay strips I’d bought off aliexpress. A test/fail carve on another sample worked fine with a 5.5mm x 1mm profile, but when I got to this one my 1mm bit broke about 3/4 of the way through the carve. I had no backup and I didn’t have time to wait for a new one to arrive, so I ended up trimming down the depth of the inlay and winging it a bit. I would have preferred to neaten up the inlay more to get the ends cleaner, but it’s not visible at normal size just in the big photos. The inlay paint also does not hold superglue properly and I ran out of time to test with wood glue and cleaning it up, so it’s friction fit.
Straight off the machine pic then the finished product.
