AvE Machines a Vacuum Clamp

This is a great introduction to AvE’s dumb*ery in the shop if you haven’t watched him. He’s a bit hard to understand, what with his gift of language, but it demonstrates a great project. This is something I could use for my slip fit boxes. The tape and hot snot routine gets a little old. Would be cool to have a mini vacuum palette to hold material down. Didn’t think of that. Most of the vacuum setups have been large, full bed things.

Spoiler: it is successful, but one wouldn’t think with all the missteps and mistakes it would turn out.

Just a nice demonstration of the steps to machining/milling something and all the pitfalls to be aware of. Yes, he fell in them all!

Man, this guy is hilarious! Pressure sensitive estop switch that fits between your buttocks. Man, that would be EXCELLENT!

These might work for holding the slip fit boxes

I was just wondering whether it could have been printed!
As an aside, what kind of vacuum pump would it take to be effective with any of this? I’ve only got one outlet by my cnc, and it’s already running the lowrider, the pc, and the dust collector…

Winston Moy has been doing some vacuum clamp stuff too.

I’ve been thinking about trying some sort of vacuum clamping system. I would probably try an air compressor powered venturi approach. maybe even print the venturi?

What kind of cfm/psi would you need to be effective?

I haven’t tried this yet, but I don’t think a lot of air is needed. I’ve seen 3cfm @ 90psi referenced on a commercial venturi sold for this aplication. The compressor powered approach appeals to me because I’ve plumbed some air lines in my shop (garage), though I didn’t foresee this application, so I don’t have a line right by the Lowrider. Also, I dis-assembled my compressor and manhandled it down into my crawlspace, where I can’t even hear it running, so it wouldn’t add to the noise level.

I just watched that one this morning! I was laughing hysterically after he surfaced that board perfectly, paused, and plunged in a divot. “&#$%!”

It especially made me feel better about having done something very similar last night.

I have a 1" diameter pocket in my lowrider’s spoil board from doing something like that. Turns out the Dewalt won’t even slow down when you accidentally power off your steppers and it plunges a surfacing bit down a half inch.

I put a channel in a couple inches long, 1.25" wide right at 0,0.

…so I’m going to put in a flush mount surface plate!

Heh, “At 3am a mouth is a mouth!”
