I tried making a clock, and works perfectly I 3D printed the sides.
But I am not really happy with the looks, anyone made a clock that looks better?
What part don’t you like, I think it looks pretty dang good. Some fun matching clock hands would dress it up real nice.
I think it is too busy, I am more into modern designs. I think I was more focused on trying stuff with my cnc, and overdid the cnc part a bit. Also I was thinking that filling up the v-carve with resin would look way better.
I made one, but it’s more classical than yours ![]()
I like the quality of your clock, and the combination of milling and 3-d printing. Make another one that fits your taste more!
Good job on the clock! I think it looks good. In my opinion, adding some color will help pull attention to some parts of the clock and make it feel less busy. I think adding color to aim for a flower color would make it look nice. Since the numbers/petals should be the main focus of the clock, I am thinking that coloring the petals would look good, perhaps with white. Since the wood color is nice, the center part could be left unpainted. With it being the busiest section, perhaps paint the inner diamonds and leave the outer/larger diamonds unpainted? I think adding some yellows and whites would help. Alternatively, maybe just stain the diamonds to make the petals pop more. Again, great clock and thanks for inspiring me to make one once I complete my LR4 within a week or so.
I think you did a good job. Any changes at this point would be personal preferences.
I was thinking the opposite of Jacob.
I’d leave the inner most petals and remove the rest. For the outer petals, just do a thin ‘start’ of a line from the outside in, but only an inch or so. Just enough to infer the existence of the petal. Have the line thin out into nothingness.
Then I’d bold the numbers so they stood out a bit more.
This would leave the outer part of the clock more open where the end of the hands will be and help keep them getting lost in the design behind them.
Thanks for all the feedback, I do agree on painting it with white and some light colors would be nice. Just a bit of a pain in the ass to paint around the carving. Might be easier to try and carve it with tape on it ![]()
Thin the lines out into nothingness could be cool , but I don’t know if my bed is level enough to not make that a bit wonky. Although I could do a clear pass before milling. Below some pictures with clockwork, I just got them from a budget store and ripped them out of a clock.
Yeah, yours is way nicer
Also like the red with the blank wood, where did you get the dials?
I got several silent clock movements and hands in a kit from Amazon:
For the newer members, a while ago I posted my first version of this clock to the forum, made of Sapele (dark) wood. That album has more captions and some vids of the chips flying, if you enjoy that sort of thing.
owh That is nice, way better then getting a cheap clock from a budget shop. I also had to mill out the back to make the hour work fit, and the clicking noise makes me go insane!
I added it too my amazon cart, thanks for the tip.
I actually brainstormed the clock a bit with ai, ended up designing the internal structure myself, because AI made it too densed and complicated.
I’m more engineer then designer although I won’t use AI to design my own projects, using it for a clock like this or a sign for someone it’s very handy.
