Hi there, my dad and I built a lowrider over Christmas for him and he’s been having success with it. I’m now looking at making my own, but I’m curious about improving the rigidity and smoothness of the machine a bit and cutting down on some of our more common troubleshooting steps (z axis not strong enough, x axis chatter, difficulty tensioning the bearings that ride the tubes). To that end, I was wondering if anyone has thought about using 80/20 extrusion for the frame of the machine, like most 3d printers use. I know it would increase the cost quite a bit, but I thought it might be worth it if it improves ease of use and reliability. Does anyone see a problem with that plan, and do you think it would be worth the trouble?
At a minimum I would wait for the LR3 release, and then re-evaluate from there. The improvement is not nothing, but right now only the beta testers will know the specifics.
I don’t think it is stronger or more expensive than stainless steel 1" tubing. Most 3D printers are a lot smaller than a low rider. I don’t think 2020 would work for a 5 foot span.
