3d scanners

Why cant i find one under 300? What makes them so expensive? Why cant that 300 be broken? Are the components really that expensive?

Your cell phone and RealityCapture are free. Works great. Depends what you’re looking to scan, I suppose.

This one is $229. I have a CR Scan Lizard I got through Kickstarter. I’ve never been able to do anything useful with it. I should try again to see if the software has improved. Like everything else, it has a learning curve.

Even the expensive ones are kind of crap.

Recently bought Creality Ferret SE for $320+tax, maybe that/others will drop price during black Friday sales.

Successfully used to scan a truck, a broken finger and several things in between. Took a while to get used to, reflective dots and textures/feature-landmarks really help.

Previously messed with Kinect+PC, photogrammetry and some phone apps before. The scanner was easier/better than I expected, took some time to figure out editing/massaging mesh using software like MeshMixer, before importing simplified mesh into Fusion.

I remember Clough42 doing a few videos with a moderately priced (like $1k range) 3D scanner where he used a sprayed on surface treatment to make it easier to scan. Looking at it, apparently they’re $80 a can here, although I believe it goes a long way. Looks like there are some cheaper diy options out there.

Is that something anyone has tried to make the cheaper ones work a bit better?

Dry shampoo spray works. Just doesn’t evaporate like scanning spray.

Not when you also use it as disappearing grafitti for pranking co-workers
