3d printed vice-grip spindle lock

I have always found it difficult to do a tool change with the DW660 on my MPCNC, but when I added the vacuum shoe to the mix, it got even more difficult. To make matter even more interesting, I have somewhat limited dexterity in my left hand due to an injury when I was in my teens. I designed a little adapter to slip over a pair of C-clamp style vice grips to press the spindle-lock button on the router. It works like a charm…

I don’t know if anyone else has difficulty with this, but I will post the STL if anyone wants it.

Took the spindle lock off of the dewalt completely.

I then modified the lock so that it was C shaped instead of enclosed. I used some JB weld to glue a zip tie to the lock.

When I do a tool change, I slip the lock all the way into the device. It stays wedged in there on its own while I change the tool. Then I pull on the zip tie to remove it from the dewalt.

Makes for an easy 1-handed tool change as I don’t have to depress the button at all while changing out the tool.

I can only imagine what this would be like with limited dexterity. I have enough trouble pressing the button with one hand, turning the nut with my other hand, and holding the bit with my third hand. Vise grip adapter is a perfect solution.

Would you be willing to share some photos of that set up? I removed my lock too and looking for a way to make it even easier to hold, turn, hold the bit.

It’s ugly but works.

Sooooo, that is not what I was picturing in my head…but it has been a long day. I like the simplicity of it! Thanks much!

I’m a big proponent of function over form for most things.
