1” stainless rails

Good morning!

I am about to order some 1” stainless steel rails from a local metal working shop. They told me that it is really 3/4” inside diameter and the outside diameter was 1.05”.

Is this going to work with my 25.4mm lowrider setup?

The OD needs to be 25.4mm 25mm is different enough that Ryan made a different set of CAD models for it.

So I’m guessing 26.67mm is going to be too large.

I’m not an expert on metal working or anything but I thought the 1" was pretty darn standard.

That’s what I was thinking! I called a couple of different places and they seem surprised when I ask them for a quote of 1” stainless.

I’ll probably just go to metalsupermarket and if not, I may just break down and get a carbon steel.

I would never expect them to have such a hard time quoting me 1” O.D. anything! Oh well!

Thanks for the reply!

Ask in mm? That should force them to caliper the actual tube.

that is 3/4" Schedule 80 steel pipe which is not what you want. Even if you could make it fit, it weighs 1.48lbs/ft vs. .65lbs for .065" stainless tube so you would be adding significant additional weight to your gantry.

Try asking for “Thin wall tubing” instead of “steel pipe”. You might have better luck.

That’s a good idea. Thank you!

That’s a good point. Yeah I’m gonna try asking for thin wall tubing instead. Thank you!

As Frosty said - you don’t want SS Pipe - you have to ask for 1" OD SS Tube. If your metal place gives you a baffled look, go elsewhere. Not all steel yards work with SS. The yard I normally use only has SS Pipe and not Tube, I had to go to a different yard to get SS Tube.

Yeah, it’a all part of that nomenclature thing. Pipe and conduit are measured on the inside since they are used to transport something inside them, water, waste or wires. Tubing is used to construct something, so it’s measured on the outside, nothing goes on the inside.
