I have looked through this forum and couldn’t find an answer. What problems will I run into if I use 1/2 in MDF. Believe it or not, it is harder to find 1/4 MDF than it is to find 1/2 MDF.
1/2 is too thick for strut plates - it will foul the back of the core and stop it sliding on.
Doesn’t have to be MDF - Hardboard, plywood something like that is also acceptable.

For me too, at least at Lowe’s and Home Depot, until I stumbled upon and found that 5.x mm thick MDF/hardboard is sold in the form of other names of products, in my case, “Wainscotting” at Home Depot — mine seems more like 5.x mm thick hardboard than MDF, but that’s even better. For this, I found it’s easier to go shop in person, because online shopping makes it harder to see what you’re actually looking at. Also, helpful to get some measurements, like max width needed to cut struts, and have some way to measure while you’re in the store. Wainscotting products can have little grooves in them, separated at intervals. In my case I found some that the interval was wide enough apart that I could squeeze strut cuts between them.
My Home Depot has 1/4" MDF only in 2’x4’ precut project panels. Maybe check there if you want to use MDF

Are you suggesting that you’re not supposed to just grab a tape measure off the shelf in the tool isle on the way into the store and put it back on your way out?

I just assumed they’d be wrapped in tamper-proof whatever. I did not even look!
They’re next to the bolt cutters. You may or may not need them too.

If they have them in your area, the concrete form boards should work

Would have loved to get some of those, but for us, they are always, always “Out of Stock.”
