Z probe started going up at start of job?

Hello all,

Hoping another set of eyes can help here as I don’t know were to go with this. My LR4 has started going up all of a sudden on the Z probe at the start of a job. I have run this same job and others just a few days ago and it worked fine. If a do a z probe with the command ‘G38.2 Z-100 F60’ it works fine, going the direction expected, and stopping on contact with touch plate.

The only thing that has changed was that I noticed I was loosing steps on one of the Z axis steppers in the last job I ran. This means the beam was falling out of level during the job. This is a sign that I need to clean the linear rails that the Z axis goes up and down on. I don’t have working dust collection right now and it slowly fouls these rails. Once this was done I did the z level processes as talked about here. I tweaked the Z motor 1 to make some adjustments, as there was a couple MM out of plain.

I then, thinking all was sorted, went and ran my job again. Much to my surprise the Z axis went up and ground against the top of the travel and then stopped. I have done the reset in the web gui, restarted the controller. Re-homed the machine. Nothing I can think of has impacted this. That doesn’t mean much as I am not sure where to go with this. What am I missing here? What might have changed as this was working days?

I am running the FluidCNC controller from V1. Shipped with the firmware and I haven’t re -flashed it or anything like that. Here is the $SS output.

Share the gcode. If the command by itself works, it could be other gcode commands.

For this, I would lube the lead screws. That has fixed this problem for me. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything with the linear rails.

Had to cut some of the code in the middle of the job due to message size limits.

That G38.2 command should include a negative Z value to specify the max distance it should probe. You should get rid of the G92 after it and instead have a P13 in the G38.2 command. I’m guessing its not getting zeroed right so that G1 Z30 isn’t doing what you are expecting.

You’re also missing some important starting gcode to set some default values. Check out the starting gcode in milling basics.

Thanks Jason for those pointers. I did the changes talked about on the milling basics page and it seems to be working as expected now again. I suppose the questions is how did it work before?

Cut 4 rings last night and they all worked fine.

I’m not certain but it could have been some of the other starting gcode. For example, G20 sets the units to metric. So, if you ran a previous script with G21, it could still be in inches. Or if it was left in G91, that could do weird things. But now the script should be resetting things like that.
