Walnut Picture Frame

Had a friend call and ask for a Picture Frame to give someone that lost their house to a fire last year and were about to move in their new home. I drew up something simple in onshape then cut it out on the LR4.

Wood used was Tropical Walnut. Real pretty wood and milled very nice!

Started with surfacing down the front flat…

Then flipped it over and used the tape and CA glue method to hold it down, surfaced the back side and did the outside cut and the cut out for the picture/glass.

Forgot to get a pic before I flipped it over. But before I moved it, I took some scrap wood and screwed it down so I could get it right back in line where I needed it. Then used 2 more to sandwich it in place and that held it real well for the V carve.

After taking if off the table and doing a little sanding and brush work on the carve…

And after a coat of satin polyurethane.

I forgot to take pics of it with the glass and all in it. Really need to do better about taking finished pics lol. But I ended up ordering some glass from Amazon for it, and cut out a backer from 1/4 birch plywood. Then 3d printed 2 tabs to turn and lock the backer in place. Also bought some desk picture mounts (or whatever you would call that) from amazon to screw on the back. They loved it and the people they gave it to loved it as well.

Forgot to add…

This is the bit I used for the Vcarve. First time I have ever seen one like this and it did really well in the walnut!

I liked it so much I have it in 45° and 60° now too lol. It did better than the more expensive Whiteside bits I thought. Hopefully they last a while. I don’t do a ton of Vcarve work so should get a few years out of them at least lol.

Dude, you rock. That looks great.

This looks really, really clean. Wow.

I often feel that 30° only makes sense for fonts like the one you have there, in all other cases I prefer the 60°.

I agree for anything with wider text I would have gone with the 45° or 60°

That turned out great! I was scratching my head when I saw your first setup thinking that’s a waste of a lot of wood. And then saw that you were making a larger border frame. Nice job.

I still have the little center cut out. I’ll come up with something to do with it eventually. And a lot of the 8’ board I bought left as well lol. It really is some pretty wood. I just really didn’t have time or desire to glue up a panel from a smaller board lol.

I think it looks nicer (higher end) as a single piece.

I agree. And I don’t have to worry about it splitting or cracking later
