Squaring the Trucks

I am a software engineer and most of the best tools are completely free. And there is no reason any of us have to force our workflow on each other. Sure, we have tech. decisions and debates and we all use the same language. But there isn’t a case where one of us can’t open a file made in a different tool.

I don’t know if it is just because we are editing plain text files (although it is much more complicated than that) or if it is because software engineers like to write tools for software engineers in their spare time. Maybe if you could make a CAD program in CAD, there would be good free alternatives.

The professional CAD software world is very far from that. I can’t imagine making those decisions for a huge company.

IIRC Siemens is the company that bought onshape (from the founder, who was also a founder at SOLIDWORKS).
