SMRRF 2026- weekend of show forum log

What is the overall event like? Very similar to RMRRF? Bigger or smaller venue? Same enthusiasm from the visitors?

Nah, it’s a different setup and they want it to work with the Core One first, I also asked them about it via mail.
I am so much looking forward to it, I got one of the 1200 early bird spots. :slightly_smiling_face:

Incredibly beautiful building- the Dalton building is a brand new university engineering building. The show occupied just a fraction of the building. So, much much bigger building, but overall maybe 1/4 the actual show floor as RMRRF.

Similar in many respects.

Tremendous enthusiasm from guests, our own community members, and great engagement from show participants. We had several other participants stop by to chat.

3D printing going on in his clear backpack!

Well damn. Now I want to not only build a Lowrider on Day 1 of a *RRF, but I want to print the parts on the drive there. Ridiculous. Which is the attraction…
Presumably walking is ok, but driving could be enough external motion to mess with the print

Thanks for your LR4 build efforts and manning the stand, AJ!

Heh, the first guy is crazy. But in a good sense, I also watched the ballcycle videos, funny idea.

Thanks for sharing those pictures.

Thanks for organising all this, Jim!

I bet your voice is hoarse from all the V1E promoting you did today.

Hey. I resemble that remark!

For people that aren’t selling anything we sure did a lot of selling. But not intentionally. Just being enthusiastic about the machine.

It helps that we aren’t trying to sell 3d printers to people that already have 3d printers, but rather something that people can build with their 3d printers, to unlock another dimension to their making

There’s a look that people get as you see the gears turning in their heads and they realize that they could actually build a CNC machine.

I saw that look a bunch today.

There’s also something very genuine about community members talking about a machine in straightforward terms. We talk about not just the machine’s capabilities but also its’ practical limitations.

I am spent and do have a worn out voice, but am also really charged up from all the enthusiasm.

Unless of course you’re German and the limits get technomagically transmuted into Vollgas…

Anyway. Yes. It’s not £20k of heavy steel with a water cooled three phase spindle. But it’s the distillation of one of those machines, with a barrier to entry so low you might trip on it.

Now there’s a quote.

“Watch” section in next update will play ~20sec loop of different materials being cut, including plasma steel (Doug’s LR3). Added playlist support, with built-in editor incase you want to tweak. Rough, but good enough?

Heading out for few hrs, but wanted to share status, so… video was really rushed (i.e. crap audio/focus/lighting).

Would really appreciate feedback from V1E SMRRF Crew:

  • Did the tablets help you guys communicate what V1E community is about, and what’s possible, and how they can start their CNC build journeys ?
  • What helped, and what would be more helpful?
  • Did attendees tinker and get hands on with the tablets and get inspired/info/joy from them?

Thanks again @DougJoseph, @Tokoloshe, @Jonathjon and other Makers here being ok with me scraping your YouTube videos to squeeze onto the offline tablets… Hoping Doug’s plasma cutting LR3 gets some reactions and questions…

In my experience, when you know your topic and its something that folks find interesting, talking about it allows that enthusiasm to become contagious!

I personally love talking about these platforms and how they give the “home gamer” tools with which they can do amazing things. That’s why you’d have to chase me away from RMRRF with a pack of wolves! I usually don’t even get to view much of the rest of the show…

We are on the “first floor”, which is upstairs here in the UK.

Hey @stevempotter, thank you for sharing feedback on YT about tablet’s being too dim, and easy to miss.

Created 2min video with guidance on how to fix brightness, enough to make a lasting impression  https://youtu.be/0MByY89hOOM, hope that helps!
