Shielded wire gauge and strand count?

OK, OK…Another dumb question. 22 or 24 gauge?, stranded or not (I know that this should be stranded)?, lead count (4 for the steppers)?, shielded or not?, what type of connectors?

I am leaning toward 22 gauge 6 lead, stranded and shielded. I am still hunting down connectors for the steppers, I hate the JST connectors, pain to crimp.
