LR4 Build in Germany

Hi everybody,

i’ve recently finished the CNC and had a ton of fun building it and learning CAD/CAM. My main motivation to build one was to make guitars, of which i finished one, and am currently making another one for my brother.

Of course there were many problems, mainly software related. I went with the BTT SKR3 EZ controller and am running the CNC with Klipper and a raspi, which gave me many headaches while setting it up, but it runs now!

Also, i only have a bambu lab a1 mini, so i had to print the YZ assemblies in two pieces and glue them together :face_with_peeking_eye: . I need to some more feed and speeds tests to find better settings, im currently being very conservative using a 2mm DoC and 1000mm/min with a 6mm endmill.

It lives on an old foosball table.

I started planning the build at the start of June and am still tinkering around with it. It was in a usable state at the end of July, but i had less time after that because i was finishing uni. So the actual planning and building took about 2 months. My total cost came to about 460€, mostly ordering from amazon and aliexpress. The work area is about 600x1200mm, (spoil board currently goes to y 800 because that’s all I needed) which fit on a old tabletop i had.

The build itself went really smoothly. As i mentioned i was hesitant before because i couldn’t print the YZ assemblies in one piece, but went ahead with it anyway. I guess the glue didn’t fully harden before assembly so the parts are slightly shifted. This didn’t matter in the end. You can see the seam to the left of the left linear bearing, where it hasnt shifted yet.

The plastic XZ plates were switched for aluminum ones after I noticed how flimsy they were on the machine. The aluminum plates made a huge difference in stability (who would have guessed). I cut them with a jigsaw, printed template and a buch of filing.

While cutting the strut plates the machine skipped due to loose grubscrews on the stepper pulleys. They were still usable though.

I went with the BTT board with the intention to use Marlin. But couldn’t get the ESP32 wifi module to work with it, so I switched over to Klipper. The controller box has a second story where the raspi sits. I also spent at least a week troubleshooting this thing, which in the end turned out to be a faulty micro SD card.

I thought it’d be cool to have a cnc pendant so i ordered a compatible touchscreen and made the one you can see in the picture. That got abandoned during the troubleshooting and i ended up using the klipper webinterface with my phone, which is also more responsive. So if anyone has project ideas that use a raspi and touchscreen im all ears :).

One problem i still can’t figure out is that the machine can shift about .2mm to the top right after a toolchange/homing. You can see this in the last picture when i cut the guitar fretboard, the slots are shifted over to the right a bit. I think i might yank too hard on the core during a toolchange, which might move the entire gantry? The offset is still there after homing. I cut a second fretboard and was more gentle when changing tools, and didn’t home it after, and it turned out to spec. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Here is the guitar. It might not be everyones cup of tea, but i really like it. My brother will get the same model, left handed, 7 instead of 8 stings, and a walnut body. This is the 6th guitar i’ve build, the ones before were made using a handheld router. The biggest challenge with this one was making the 3D model, and all the considerations that go with it, as well as learning to generate tool paths for the first time’.

Thank you! The neck is screwed on. And yes i did cut all the wood (Fretboard, neck, body) on the cnc. It so nice to be able to just program the distances between the frets, instead of manually measuring and cutting each one.

Some i like are: Austin Shaner (for 3D modeling and toolpaths), Crimson Guitars (generally building guitars), tchiks guitars has a series where he shows how to build one with minimal tools, Adventures from the shed of dreams shows entire builds with explanations in between.

DANG, that is a heck of an advanced project. You knocked it out of the park!
