That looks amazing! Ryan said he designed this to be slow, (that’s a bit out of context. I may have misunderstood him). I am curious as to the speeds you are getting with the new motors and drivers?
My application will have a very lightweight working head (a Co2 Laser mirror pointing down to the work), so no spindle or router motor. Just curious about your speeds.
I like to mill plywood at 4000mm/min with 9.525mm DOC. That is by no means the limit of the machine. It’s not a race for me.
I imagine the original design could run as fast with a laser attached; however, I am only guessing because I have not used a laser yet. Maybe on my new Primo…
Living in the desert, heat becomes a factor for me before rigidity or torque.
Yup, you’d need to redesign pretty much anything that touches one of the motor mounts, which have space and bolt patterns for the NEMA 17s.
It sounds like some people have updated the STLs for NEMA 23s, but I can’t remember seeing them published all together anywhere.
Honestly, if it’s your first build and you want to get to cutting sooner, I’d go with the base build NEMA 17s. You’ll be able to get more useful advice from everyone here because that’s the most common build.
For what it’s worth, the only time I’ve wanted to upgrade is when I’ve been a little too aggressive in the feed rate and ended up with the motor/belt skipping. To fix that problem, all I needed was to dial back the speed and have a little more patience…
Hey Tom
I know it has been forever since we have talked. Since my heart attack and getting over Covid I have decided life is too short to wait any longer to get my table up and running.
I have decided to build it from 2 x 2 in steel square tubing. I will be using 3” x 3” legs. I also plan to try and create a gantry out of steel as well. Not sure how that will look but I think, seeing it is going to be a 6’ x 10’ table.
I am glad I went with the spindle and upgraded steppers. I have the new pets for a heavy duty table.
I have decided that I will be working with hardwoods to make cutting boards, large river tables 2 inches thick overall. I have enough black walnut to make 3 3 x 6 foot tables. Can’t wait to start.
I have yet to printed a single 3D part that I have kept. I purchased some new filament and plan to start printing soon.
I appreciate all the help you have given. The specs for the upgraded table, the files for printing parts and the flat wooden pieces. You have gone above and beyond to help a newbie.
I will PM you when I get my Mac fixed. I will send you daily photos as I begin welding the table together. I am picking up most of the steel in Heflin Alabama tomorrow afternoon.
How are your projects coming along? Kitchen finish yet?
No, only the XZ Main. The 25mm parts of the classic Lowrider2 are compatible. I will upload the parts in a collection, when I build it, so im sure, that every part ist compatible.
I printed the whole things, waiting for the milling parts to build it.
I didnt print the belt tensioner for the x-axis yet, because of the mounting with the big plate.
I will build it with a Duet 2 Wifi and a Mafell FM 1000. I ordered a 1,5kw china spindle, but I will not use it.
