Hey, you all know lots of stuff. Figured I’d ask for help on the long shot someone recognized this connector. It kind of looks like it’ll fit the internal threads of a 20 lb. standard hardware store propane tank (here in the US at least), but they don’t. The threads can’t engage because the fitting is too long, and also I think they’re a little undersized too (but I can’t be sure because they never get to try). Anyone know what this is?
The extreme outer diameter (major diameter?) of the threads is just under 22 mm or also close to 7/8 inch, a bit hard to measure precisely. The brass left-handed threaded nut can slide along the fitting, and presumably compresses the nylon washer to seal the end.
Looks like the fitting on acetylene welding tank. Later. I will check measurenents.
You can get at any welding supply. Online look for nipples CGA-500 510-580
The clue to the fitting is first it is brass , second is the hex head on the end. That is how you put the fitting on and remove it without damaging the brass.
I believe you may find a similar size on some of the Patio space heaters. But it has been a long time since I have messed with one
OK I think you’ve got me on the right track @larryk and thank you! I found this reference site which only lists CGA 510 for propane in the reference chart PDF linked at the top, and sure enough CGA 510 has 7/8” threads. The diagram looks just like mine except there’s a washer on the bullet meant to deform, but that isn’t uncommon in Amazon searches. Can’t for the life of me find a female CGA 510 to QCC1 adapter (tough to search for I guess) but I’m sure I will eventually. TY!
Okayyy maybe it’s NOT CGA 510. CGA 510 is apparently the same as POL (prest-o-lite). POL is the internal threads on 20 lb. propane tanks you get from the store here in the US, hence what I have is not POL (nor CGA 510) since it doesn’t fit. Trying to figure this out is driving me insane, I think I’ll go walk into the sea.
Do you have a welding gas supplier locally that also sells propane? That’s where I’ve been able to find all manner of odd gas cylinder fittings and people who know what they are/where they’re used…
That’s a good thought, I’ll look around. There are some promising hits on Google Maps but it’s hard to tell. I also probably need to take a step back, give up on the mystery regulator, and focus on the standard regulator I just bought…if I can find the male grill-style to 1/4 or 3/8 in. hose barb connector I’ll be golden.
Hang on. What is your end goal? Are you wanting to adapt or modify a propane or other gas cyclinder to a hose or another project?
perhaps your wanting to to make a fire pit.

Holy shit, I found a link to the manual on an archive.org backup of the product listing! If POL CGA-510 is indeed the fitting I have no idea why I can’t connect it to my tank since from what I’ve been able to see the inside fitting for a 20 lb. propane tank is supposedly POL? Maybe I’m not pressing hard enough or maybe it’s out of spec? I know it’s LH threaded they just don’t bite.
Not important since I have a new regulator and a fitting to go from 3/8 in. flare male (grill fitting side of standard US regulator) to hose barb coming Wednesday, but I couldn’t close the tabs until I did some more searching.
I don’t know any of the standards numbers or references, but years ago a plumbing contractor left a propane bottle at my parents’ house. The tank looked like a regular one for a grill, but it had different threads on the valve. No way a grill connection would go in - diameter was too small, but we never saw what did connect to it. I’m wondering if you’ve got that kind of regulator.
Seems like there is a check valve embedded inside the QCC1/Type1 valve (CGA 510) on the propane tanks that can prevent certain specs-compliant regulators from connecting. This person went through the same stuff I did and ended up mating an LCC27 adapter to 1/4 in. and then from 1/4 in. back to QCC1/Type1.
