Oh, you’ve met my parents.
I do think some form of indicator that would tell us that we’re responding to a first-time builder could be helpful. I don’t mind answering questions about the choices I made, or the mods I use, but I also admit that I don’t know everyone that has built a MPCNC or a LR3/4 the way Ryan does. I don’t really know what this might look like, and I’d never want it to make anyone feel less of a member of our community. We all started with our first build.
I keep thinking, “A machine that doesn’t run on a piece of plywood ain’t gonna run on a fancy table.” But then again, my back tells me the table is important long term.
That’s fine, more salt and pepper left for me:slightly_smiling_face:.
Seriously though, build it the way the designer made it,get it running. Then you can add all the mods you want.
Well that would be a shame IMO.
It’s nice to see how far other people can take the original design and make it evolve, that’s what motivated me to give it a try in the first place.
I don’t think I would have sticked to the forum at all if every project I could see was just the same as the next one.
But maybe that’s just me.
In my opinion it’s probably better to just try and discuss with the noobs to guide them towards the best possible path rather than censoring stuff he can see.
Maybe there could be some kind of little incentive, like for example having some kind of award if the new user is able to make his machine make its first moves, or when he successfully manages to make the crown. Some kind of little badge on his avatar/signature/whatever to create engagement. Kind of the same stuff we get when our posts get 10+ likes.
Also, what’s that thing about a yellow brick road? is there some kind of reference I’m missing as a non english speaker? I kinda guess the meaning but where does this come from?
Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty?
Oh no you don’t Yellow Brick Road, we ain’t changin it to hiking trails now!
I really do have to credit you for this. I was very different about all of this, you taught me why this way was better.
OMG, YES, yes exactly!
Okay we can’t change it to hiking trails but we can change it to seasoning without tasting first!
All experienced users can change their avatar to a part they cut or carved? I am not sure what discourse has available in terms of visible badges for this sort of thing.
They have either custom tags like here:
Or you can do custom avatar flair based on groups, like this
If we could make a level 2.5 this would be perfect.
The only automated one I have is patreon and I did not set it up. Something like this would be good as well if it was automated. Maybe the help bot can automate this…hmmm
Do custom “Crown” flair for those who have posted their successful crown. ?
I’ve never seen the backend of Discourse, but it sounds like any flair can be added for any group.
The problem is that Ryan would have to manage manually adding people into a “builder” group to be able to do that
How about a V1E certified Signature
I don’t think we need any of that. If you don’t recognize the name, you can select it and a little modal comes up.
For example, Mike has been here for a bit. We can entertain his questions about Quantum Struts.
When a new user posts, there is a pinkish banner, or they will say it’s their first build. Lead with the YBR
I tend to agree.
I don’t really think we’ve ever had issues identifying when someone is a first time builder or not
Though the flair could be used to help identify experienced users to new users who don’t know the people around here.
That might help them know who they can trust more easily
Is there a reason we don’t do “signatures” on this forum? I know several others I have been on there would be a “signature” you could set up for any time you post. And you could list your machines and what not there and kind of give an idea of your experience level I guess. A new user wont have a machine listed, but some of us would have several listed. I am not for or against it, was just something I have always wondered why we didn’t have here LOL
That would be awesome
That might also encourage people to not skip the crown. It seems like I keep seeing new users skip a few steps.
People generally identify themselves when they get here. I didn’t make a crown until my 4th machine or something. Orher people will go through making a crown and cutting Al before posting.
It hasn’t been an issue in the past. The difference is just making sure we tell people that stock is best for your first time and modifications should only be considered after they have some experience. Then make it clear that we are supportive of whatever they want to do with their machine. Add that they should post about it here so we can geek out on it.
Once someone has said that in a post, just use common sense. This group is one of the smartest groups I know. Let’s not make the solution here overly clever.
