I need help with the Yellow Brick Road

I will be taking a step back from posting for a while. The only real person that has a True Vested interest here is Ryan. We are all here to help him.

today, i made a mistake, I posted that the stl for the printed plates was on Printables. I had no knowledge it was not. None. That was a mistake, one that maybe I should have looked and seen that it was not there.

A true mistake, and now that I see that it could have caused some problems, I am concerned. This is someones bread and butter. To me it is just fun, to someone else it is not. I really am glad that my mistake was minor, very minor, but just the same it could have been major.

I will be very cautious from now on. Ryan is a friend, someone I met and spent a weekend with (mrrf, now get any other ideas out of your head  ) , and I truly admire for making something that he is very close to make him his bread and butter.

I don’t think that’s what he wants, either…

I’ll let the person here who has never made a mistake correct me if I’m wrong…but I think that’s part of being human.

I don’t think Ryan’s intent here was to scare anyone off, and probably, if I had to guess, he was likely worried a post like this would.

I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

I think he just wants everyone to think a little more before posting and make sure we are helping people the right way that’s in line with his goals here.

I completely agree with @Michael_Melancon here on both accounts. Every single one of us has, and will again, make mistakes and say the wrong thing. So what. It happens. I truly hope that you will not take a step back and will continue to be a great member of this community!

I see wisdom in what Ryan is nudging us toward, and greatly appreciate that he is carefully trying to find the best approaches toward this, and at the same time, also greatly appreciate this comment:

I may be in a slender minority, or there may be more like me than I realize. I sheepishly admit that I am one of those who, as a new V1 maker, wanted to immediately tweak, mod, and tailor the machine to exactly what I needed/wanted, and from my perspective, one of the greatest strengths of the V1 community, and V1 machines, was … that type of tweaking, modding, and customizing was doable, and not shamed or frowned upon. I now think that Ryan is absolutely right that we need to extol the virtues of the yellow brick road, while at the same time, being careful not to shame or discourage the concept of tweaking and customizing. I think if we go too far and it comes across as shaming or discouraging, we could wind up driving off some of the people who would have been great makers in our community.

Nope! Don’t you dare. I can assure you I have been formulating this post for several days, it had nothing to do with anything you might have said this morning.

Mistakes are made, I am not going to lose everything because of any post one of you makes (Now I can make a stupid post and have…).

The main point here is new user are precious to me and it is most important to get them up and running. If one of you is adding a lightsaber to your build, I am 100% going to answer a new user’s post first. All of you were new at one point, and I really hope I was one of teh first to help you answer an issue you might have been having, if not I am very confident whoever it was treated you well.

This gave us a big chuckle.

@vicious1 Thank you, Ryan, for keeping things in perspective, and for helping us to keep things in perspective. In the story arc of my time here I have made the very types of mistaken choices that you refer to here, both in my own builds, and probably in answers to others. Will do my best to try to keep these things in focus going forward.

Two thoughts for myself going forward.

  • Be careful to explain that “XYZ” is a mod, is non-standard, is not necessary.
  • When recording video, either do the above, or frame the shot so “XYZ” is not in the view window.

No worries, we all have.

You can make your machine however you want, just make sure to push people not to make it your way unless there is a reason, or you are the one they will always have to come to for support. The bad thing about that is it doesn’t matter what you say, if they are following your instructions they will want to do it your way so as not to deviate while learning. I stressed this a lot, but your setup has no other options, so you are going to have a lot of people that do it your way. Please do your best to help them understand why you made those choices and why they should not if possible. I am sure we will all help when / if we can.

When teaching tech made the cordless router Lowrider, and said how poor of a choice it was we still get people asking about it.
Things like this will always happen, just do your best to keep people on the yellow brick road.

One thing if I may suggest is the difference between jackpot and skr boards. While jackpot boards are recommended there are still people (myself included) who is using SKR boards mainly cause I like having an attached screen. At work ATM but I don’t recall anything saying much of the comparison and I am a firm believer that choices are great to make if people are given the right knowledge to make an educated choice

I think when this topic comes up, it’s usually covered pretty fairly.

Naturally though, the people who use the Jackpot are going to favor it, and the SKR users will favor it.

There was a recently active thread here for it as well.

It is pretty tricky giving support sometimes though. Some of us who have only ever used one of them don’t really think about the other side if the user doesn’t specify which one they have.

I am confident I fall in the category of new user and, from that viewpoint, provide the following commentary: First, I completely agree with Ryan’s original post in this thread.

(To provide background, I built an entire LR3 gantry with SKR control, stopped before building the table over a need for some simple measurements. During research for said measurements, all the reading squirreled me to currently building a LR4 with Jackpot.)

This. While I have used both. It’s been quite some time since I have used a SKR on anything but my V4 3d printer so my memory on a lot of it is super fuzzy. I try to answer when I can but if I can’t remember for sure I will tend to hold back and let someone more fluent answer the SKR questions

And as someone who has used a primo and LR with both. Jackpot all day every day

Yeah I have been shying away from any major comparisons between boards since for what we do they are 99% the same.

SKR has a wired screen, jackpot wireless.
Jackpot is faster at raster laser etching
Jackpot is easy to change firmware settings if ever needed.

Other than that the jackpot is half the price and smaller.

What sort of info would have helped you make a decision between the two?

I think the fact that the jackpot is in house V1 should hold a lot of merit. I remember sitting back watching it come to life in pure amazement of what you guys can accomplish

Also, file upload over wifi to FluidNC on Jackpot is way faster than wifi upload via ESP3D with Marlin on SKR. JackPot also has super bright endstop LEDs, great for LightTube mods

Maybe Jackpot CNC Controller - V1 Engineering Documentation could lead with a list of pros/strengths/cons :man_shrugging:

I find i miss the screen as well, but honestly i do not know why! I think only because it was always there! To me i squash that, because the ease of change with the yaml config is sooooo GREAT! But i was using ramps and blew up my board, so i had to change and moving to fluidnc was so, dare i say, easy! And now, moving from mpcnc to lr4, yeah, it was easy too. If your board still works, use it, but if anything changes, please take a serious look at ryans board! Fluidnc changes everything!
