I need help with the Yellow Brick Road

I am not picking on anyone, more of everyone, including myself. I went to a maker faire and I heard some questions and realized we are selling ourselves short always showing off all the new stuff.

My machine should not have an SSR on it. or LEd’s. I need to lead by example.

I definitely agree with this. New users already try to jump outside the box on their own. They don’t need further pushing.

I wonder if there should be a tag or something to make it clear when a post is outside a standard build.

If it is any consolation, @vicious1, my first v1e machine was the primo. But that was not my first choice of cnc machines. (No offense) However, the sole reason I went v1e is because of these forums. And I would make that decision 10 times over. I 100% made the right choice. That was to a guy who knew 3d printers but not cncs at all. My point being, while I 100% agree with you moving forward, I don’t want you to be discouraged. These forums are superb and I really mean that. I’ll shut up now!

I don’t think this is a bad idea at first glance.

YEs! I want help pulling them back in. Make it very clear fancy filament probably gets you zero added benefits for all the expense and hassle. A Pendant actually gets you less control than what the jackpot ships with and more clicks to get there. That sort of stuff. Wiring a spindle and deciphering the wiring diagrams is a nightmare for what 10db less???

I just submitted a commit to the FAQ. It was my first ever, I hope I did it right.

If I had a vote, I’d vote for forum levels to hide some of that stuff, it will drive user interaction just like the LR4 beta being in the lounge has

The number one question at any show ever is, “Can it mill aluminum?” Nothing else.

I wan t us to still be able to use it as an idex machine but we need a clear way to separate the fun stuff for advanced experienced users from the new user that is scared to wire a jackpot.

Worried about some elitism happening. Think there might be a way to clearly add a MODS section or something to each machine and push all topic carefully to the intended user.

I’m not sure about that.

I think you want the new users to be really excited to see what is possible, but it is our responsibility as the “Veterans” to make sure they are aware of the right path to follow to get there.

lol not in the FAQ though.

it is in the instructions, I hope a new user never need to reference the FAQ’s

I see them more as the yellow brick road list of answers.

Part of the excitement of the V1 machines is seeing what is possible and what else you can do. We should absolutely be sharing this. Just don’t lead with it

I’ve been away a bit and wasn’t around much for the LR4 release.

For myself, I tried to poke my head in here and there to issue try to help in this regard with “you should build it stock first” comments, etc., but I was usually overshadowed in my attempts.

Even today outnumbered 3:1 in my attempts to tell a user not to 3D print the XZ plates, even with a link to the documentation saying so.

It has honestly been a little discouraging lately for me to attempt to post certain things.

Not trying to say I am perfect or anything, just that I agree with Ryan’s sentiment that it’s been tough to manage getting people on the right track. I think the excitement of the LR4 release and the increased traffic has just let it get led astray a bit.

I don’t see a PR…so… maybe not…

There might be elitism, but I wonder if that would happen regardless. As you mentioned the other day 'you see it through eyes i can no longer see it from as a new user", I have been trying to dive into fluidNC and learn more about the jackpot controls, but their discord is a trainwreck of a bunch of new stuff and going way above. Their documentation is good but I find I don’t even know what it’s called to look it up there.

Some thoughts I have had while in the process of learning:
“What does other people do to line up their projects of different sizes each time”
“Do I home my machine everytime, or is setting the gcode (g92) good enough”
“I wonder what some of the good noises sound like, vs these bad ones I can tell, is my machine only making bad cutting noises”
“is there supposed to be 0 chatter, or is that for very expensive machines”

All very valid, things you definitely do not know the answer to. Once you run the test crown, you will get the answer to a few of those and then your first cutting project will answer the rest. We can guide you something’s just have to be tried though. Start a thread ask all the questions you want in your section and watch how many people are willing to jump in and help out.

We are also starting to get monster threads with new users asking questions in it. We need to get back to pushing build thread so we have some idea of who and what we are supporting.

Spitballing: could the solution be just a very low bar? Like maybe create a build thread that shows a crown test at which point the mods section opens? Idk. I get the wanting to show case all the cool stuff it can do at the same time.

So, last year I was a brand new user to the forum, and had never touched a CNC machine before.

I had seen lots of CNC machines, but always assumed owning one would be out of reach for me.

One day I came across something somewhere and it occurred to me “What if I could actually DIY one?”

Some internet searches later, I found the V1 Forum.

I lurked and didn’t post anything for a week or two. Then I started asking questions here and there.

About 6 weeks after joining the forum, I bought a kit and built a machine.

My machine is still an almost all stock LR3… but if I had not been able to see all of the cool stuff the advanced users were doing, I might not have ever made that far.

Seeing the cool things I could one day do with it went a long way in convincing me to get involved
