Hi all, thanks for the support! I live in Europe, so I’m not familiar with U.S. steel tubing standards—sorry if my question sounds odd, @Jonathjon . I’m considering using 25x3mm steel tubing as it seems like a good compromise between cost and stiffness. I’ve already assembled many parts that didn’t require the tubing. Now, I’m debating whether to cut down the MGN rails (currently 300mm), the 220mm lead screw, and the GT2 belt to finish my LR3, or if I should wait a few days and go straight for the LR4…
If you already have the tubing then I would just stick with the LR3. That size tubing is too small for the LR4. The smallest it can take is 29.5mm
Hi @Jonathjon , thanks again for your advice! I’ve been quite busy the last two weeks, so I haven’t bought the tubes yet. I’ll considerating wait for more information on the possible tubing sizes available for the LR4 build here in the EU before making any decisions. Appreciate all the help!.
No problem at all! All the info should be out in the next few days. I know Ryan is working his tail off trying to get it all done and keep up with orders at the same time.
32mm, you can get it at www.jabimetal.at.
Thank you very much, Philipp. Unfortunately, I think I’ll need to find a local solution, as shipping a 2600mm pipe would probably be too expensive.
That’s true. Maybe the Y could be split and then joined with a plug again?
I’ve already thought about that and will keep it as a backup solution.
At the moment, I’m considering buying the Vevor spindle since it’s available again. Do you think 25x3mm normal steel tubes would be strong enough for this spindle? With a weight of 3.5kg, it’s not exactly the lightest option. I was actually planning to buy the LR3 metal XY plates directly from Ryan, but they’re no longer available, and the shipping time would probably be quite long. How did you make your first ones?
I had them laser cut before I realised that wasn’t allowed per the license.
The LR 3 also allows for smaller rails on Y. I used 25x2mm stainless steel, at one time I put 10 more kgs in the middle of the gantry to test something, wasn’t a problem at all.
That being said, I wanted to put the plates on the wall as a mural, but I’d consider selling them to you together with the SS pipes I still have. Then you’d only have to worry about Y.
Where are you from again? Oldenburg might just be a short drive away.
Did you print all the parts for the LR3 already? I also have some lying around.
It’s not that far, about 6 hours . Yes, I’ve already printed all the parts and assembled all the parts that can be mounted without the pipes. What width do you currently have on your LR3? If I remember correctly, you had a width of 800mm?
Nah, 1220mm X, 900mm Y. I wanted to have the option to go full sheet.
I should have gone 30mm more, but I mainly built it for 1200x600mm Hornbach sheets.
@Tokoloshe , thanks again for your help and for offering to sell me your pipes! Last weekend, I finally bought my 25x3mm pipes and even got them cut. I originally planned to use Mach3 as the control software, and the stepper part along with the wiring seems all clear, but I’m not entirely sure about wiring the spindle. Does anyone in the forum have experience with this?
