Advice on using an Old 3d printer for parts?

Hello everyone, i have a old anycubic mega s 3d printer collecting dust and was woundering if any of you have made the lowrider 4 with parts salveged from 1?

I understand that the stepper motors only have a Holding Torque: 42 Ncm (0.42 Nm / approx. 60 oz-in) and the lead screws are 8mm x 330mm

I also have a 3018 pro cnc i used 1 time and could not hear anything for a week… so can use that for parts as well…

But it just seems silly for me to spend money i dont have on parts, when its just sitting there doing nothing. Its got it all power supply, control board 5x motors ,led screen the lot…if anyone has any constructive advice or input on using the old parts then please do give your 2 cents on if i am totally going the wrong way.. thank you for your time..

I made one with spare printer parts and run it on klipper. Use the largest motor for the x axis and up your motor current to not skip. No big deal.

Ryan even added slots to the yz plates to allow for the smaller motor wire side plug connector from used printer motors.

That’s very much on the low side, particularly for the X axis. I wouldn’t use these less powerful motors on X at all. It’s even on the weak side for Y. You might be able to get away with using them for Z, though.

If that power supply is at least 65 Watt, 12V to 24V, then you should be able to use it for a LowRider build.

You can use many different controllers and firmware to build a LowRider, but be aware of the potential limitations you will face. You’d need to provide more details on specifically what board type and revision your 3018 controller is. Some are surprisingly capable of being re-purposed to run a LR class machine. Some are JUNK. We would need to get those details to advise you.

Again, need details- may or may not be of value to a LR build.

How many starts? Is the leadnut mechanically compatible with the stock LR part mounting holes? Are they 8mm diameter screws?

You will be making compromises that may be fine for you. For example, if your leadscrews are single start, 1mm pitch, they will have plenty of torque but will be really slow moving. That’s fine if you mostly cut flat parts, but would suck badly if you plan to do large carves.

So to really help you, we need to know more about what you plan to do with your machine and what size of machine you plan to build. What CAD and CAM software are you familiar with?

Details will help us help you.

Thank you all ever so much for taking the time to reply , i will collect more detailed info/part numbers .. and yes i agree that i will have to get the larger more powerful motors. Was wishfull thinking on my part..

Thank you again

The motors may be on the smaller side, but You only need the one bigger one for x. My beta version lr4 has run for almost 2 years with small printer motors in y and z without issue once i configured them correctly. Just lower your acceleration values and they work just fine.

So the printer uses 2x T8x8 trapezoidal lead screw (8mm diameter, 2mm pitch, 8mm lead 4 start) at 330mm long on its Z-axis, so i cauld also use the longer linier rail design by Mirkoferronato..

The 3018 pro uses a GC3D-V2.1 controler also fitted with an emergancy stop and has a zero set probe.. and a ofline controler..
